SEAI Solar Grants for Homes in Ireland (2025)

Thinking about going solar? The SEAI Solar PV grant makes it even more affordable for Irish homeowners to invest in clean energy. If you own a home built before 2021, you could receive up to €1,800 toward the cost of a new solar PV system.

This guide explains how the grant works, how much you could receive, and how to make sure your installation qualifies.

How Much Can I Get?

The grant is based on the size of your solar panel system, measured in kilowatt-peak (kWp). The larger the system, the more support you get — up to a maximum of €1,800.

SEAI Solar Grant - Frequently Asked Questions

What questions we usually get about SEAI Solar Grant

How much is the SEAI solar grant worth?

The SEAI offers up to €1,800 in grant support for solar PV installations. The amount you receive depends on the size of your system (measured in kWp). For example:
  • 2 kWp = €1,300
  • 3 kWp = €1,550
  • 4 kWp or larger = €1,800 (maximum grant)

Am I eligible for the grant?

To qualify for the grant:
  • You must own the home where the system will be installed
  • Your home must have been built and occupied before December 31st, 2020
  • You must use an SEAI-registered solar installer (like us)
  • The system must use new, approved materials
  • You’ll need to arrange a BER (Building Energy Rating) assessment after installation
Does the grant cover battery storage or diverters?

No, the SEAI grant only covers solar panel installation. There is no current grant for battery storage or immersion diverters. However, these can still be added as part of your system at an additional cost.

How and when is the grant paid?

The grant is paid after installation is complete, and once all documentation (including the BER assessment) has been submitted and approved by SEAI. It is paid directly to the homeowner as a one-time payment.

Can I claim the grant on a new build?

No. Only homes that were built and occupied before 31st December 2020 are eligible. New builds typically benefit from other energy efficiency standards and are not included in this scheme.

Can I get the grant more than once?

Each property is only eligible once. However, if you move house and the new home doesn’t already have a PV system installed, you can apply for the grant again.

Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?

In most cases, no—planning permission is not required for rooftop solar panels on private homes. There are some exceptions in protected structures or heritage areas, but we’ll advise you if needed.

What size system do I need to get the full grant?

To receive the maximum €1,800 grant, you need to install a system of 4.0 kWp or larger, which is roughly 10–12 panels depending on the make and model.

How long does the grant application process take?

Once your application is submitted, SEAI approval usually takes 1–2 weeks. We'll handle this part for you and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Can you help with the application?

Absolutely. As a registered SEAI installer, we handle the grant process for you, from application to documentation and BER assessment.
